Web 2.0 pedagogy driven


Web 2.0 refers to a new understanding of the internet as a means of distributed and self-organized vs. centrally and linear organized processes of content production, editing and delivery. The overall objective of G8WAY is to take advantage of the fast growing availability of web 2.0 technologies, and elaborate a pedagogy driven web 2.0 environment for a variety of learning activities taking place during educational transition.

In the course of the G8WAY approach the project seeks to improve learners’ knowledge, skills and key competencies acquired in order to successfully cope with the most crucial challenges emerging from transition.

The project alongside a pedagogy framework, will produce an analytical tool, which will allow for the analysis of single learning activities by their learning characteristics, such as reflection, conversation, experience and demonstration. Analysis might refer to learning activities already in place or to be elaborated within the course of the project. The tool shall allow pedagogy developers and teachers to make informed decisions regarding the selection of technologies and appropriate use of web 2.0 tools, by mapping learning activities against the analytical categories of the pedagogy framework. Furthermore pedagogy developers will be able to reflect their instructional design in the light of pedagogy theories.

Thus, from a functional point of view pedagogy frameworks serve as baseline for pedagogy development, which however have to refer to a either a real or simulated learning activity. To serve this purpose the project will develop initial scenarios, each of which will address a basic learning situation, typically appearing during educational transition.

The pedagogy framework in this context will serve the purpose of analyzing the learning characteristics and underlying pedagogy principles of a given learning situation, which might take place in a formal or informal setting.

The G8WAY project employs a set of basic concepts available through existing pedagogy frameworks, which however are further developed to meet the specific requirements of learning processes taking place during educational transition. The G8WAY pedagogy framework covers:

  • Pedagogic theories and approaches, which allow us to reflect learning in transitions and its implications for the design of web 2.0 powerered learning environments.
  • A methodology to reflect learning technology in the light of pedagogy theories and models as well as analyse and categorize learning technology with relation to its learning characteristics. Moreover the methodology serves as a basis against which to benchmark pedagogical principles for any particular learning scenario developed within the G8WAY project.
  • Pedagogical classification is understood here as tagging the learning tools and objects with schemes that characterize them according to the pedagogical standpoint that was used to create them, or to the actual pedagogical orientation of their constituent learning contents and activities.
  • Persona method, which will allow us to identify trends or patterns in user behaviours, expectations, motivations and experienced support in transitions in order to develop learning scenarios into educational transition.
